Smart pages - A new UX generation for editors (Round 4)

Until now UX in the digital media industry related only to the display of information and how to navigate it. This meant editors were limited to a one-size-fits-all user experience. Technology now allows us to know what type of device the user has and also its source of origin (search, social networks, direct, etc.) and whether it is the first time the user is connecting in a given period of time. Editors will use this information to provide users with a personalised UX. That’s what Smart Pages aims to achieve.

UE Content Intelligence (Round 4)

Most news stories have a lifespan of less than two days. The challenge is to extract knowledge from the content generated just before, or in the very first moments, of publication. This enables UE to make decisions that can maximise revenue. The main component is a Machine Learning engine for real-time indexing of news at the moment of publication. This helps optimise advertising allocation based on content and provides journalists with the tools for analysing the relationship between content and user engagement. Allocation of advertising on news sites is usually done via behavioural targeting, but a user navigation history is not always available, so inventory is sometimes sold at low prices or not sold at all. This solution is aimed to fill the gap and help UE take full advantage of its inventory

SEE, SAFETY EXPERIENCE ENGINE (Round 4)

Business models based on digital advertising are being eroded by false news, fraudulent advertising that limits safe brand environments and the lack of common measurement criteria (repeated statements and lack of third-party credibility). The SEE (Safety Experience Engine) project certifies content as friendly if it provides educational value, informs and entertains, or highlights actions with a positive impact in a safe environment for different age groups. This gives incentives for brands to invest in premium sites. The platform will also detect and automatically remove fraudulent advertising.

Monetization Platform for Hyperlocal News Sites (Round 4)

Building a community of hyperlocal journalists who generate stories that connect with users, provide a layer of credibility and a feeling of belonging, while at the same time making that content profitable. The aim is to become a real alternative for hyperlocal clients like small business, micro-companies, the self-employed and brands with an interest in selected big city neighbourhoods. The monetisation tool simply solves their marketing and communication needs – working in a way that’s easy to use for non-technical clients, and useful to the news site’s readers.

Automated Follow-up Stories (Round 4)

Journalists updating workflow, after a data-based story is found and published, have to follow the same steps to verify the changes again and again – so following-up becomes a task that increases exponentially over time. Automated Follow-up Stories will be a platform to automate this follow-up work as much as possible. It's an automated machine that helps with updating data, related stories, topics and contacting people involved.

Politibot Innovación, S.L.

A tool to publish nonfiction series in messaging apps and monetise it (Round 4)

Politibot was born as an experiment to cover the Spanish election in June 2016. Having proved it’s possible to create a valuable messaging news product people are willing to pay for, the team are now applying the experience with messaging apps to create nonfiction series, branching out from breaking news. Multimedia elements will include testimonials in audio and video, or information unlocked by sharing your location. By integrating the tool with Stripe or Patreon, readers will be able to pay for the series.

Graphics generation with AI (Round 4)

Through automation journalism, the aim is to deliver graphical information – generally of breaking news – in less than a second, and to make AI and the use of graphical statistics every day newsroom tools. This will be done by automatically generating simple, recurring graphics through Machine Reading Comprehension (MRC) and Natural Language Understanding (NLU). Using NLU to analyse economic news with an unstructured text, MRC will then deliver a natural response through a visual language.
