What is the DNI? expand_more_black

The Digital News Initiative (DNI) is a partnership between Google and news publishers in Europe to support high quality journalism through technology and innovation.

The goal is to encourage a more sustainable news ecosystem -- and promote innovation in digital journalism -- through ongoing collaboration and dialogue between the tech and news sectors.

What is the DNI doing? expand_more_black

The Digital News Initiative is focusing on three key pillars:
  • Product development: Google and news publishers will establish a ‘product working group’ to enable a close, on-going dialogue exploring product developments to increase revenue, traffic and audience engagement. Find out more here.
  • Supporting Innovation: Google will support and stimulate innovation in digital news journalism over the next three years by creating an innovation fund to support and stimulate innovation in digital news journalism over the next three years. Find out more here.
  • Training & research: Google will invest in new training and development resources for journalists and newsrooms across Europe, and will fund research into the changing media landscape. Find out more here.

We are working to develop the appropriate structure to make sure we hear from as many voices who are interested in this area. We will be updating the website and contacting all DNI participants interested in this pillar in the coming months.

We are working closely with the Reuters Institute for the Study of Journalism at Oxford University to fund their Digital News Report, expanding to 20 countries across Europe.

Google’s NewsLab team is running training sessions for journalists on Google tools (see www.google.com/mediatools) and we are hiring in Europe to have dedicated resources over here for training sessions.

Google has established a €150m innovation fund to support and stimulate innovation in digital news journalism over the next three years. Applications are welcome through the DNI Innovation Fund page, which also contains further information on the fund’s processes and governance.
